Mrs. Meredith's kindergarteners have been busy researching praying mantises. They used the scientific method to compare their observations to their hypothesis, but they still had more questions. So, they enlisted the help of an expert, Aaron Mullins, an entomologist at the University of Florida. They developed their "wonderings" and then used Skype to ask Mr. Mullins their questions. They learned that their mantis, aka Pinch, is a male, and is nearing the end of his life cycle. He does not have a nose or teeth, but instead uses his antennae to smell and his mandibles to eat. The students were very excited to deepen their knowledge. Thanks Mr. Mullins! | |

All of the students in grades K-2 have visited the Westbrook Library at least once. They have been learning about the differences between fiction and nonfiction books, and where to find them in the library. Older students have been using the signs in the library to help them find books on subjects of interest. Ms. Storrie shared a fun fiction book called Don't Squish the Sasquatch by Kent Redeker and Bob Staake, and a nonfiction book called Actual Size by Steve Jenkins. Did you know that the eye of a giant squid is more than 12 inches across? |
