Insect Observations
Kindergarteners in Mrs. Meredith's classed found a huge insect on their classroom window. They captured it, watched it, and then began to wonder, "What kind of insect is this?" They came into the library with the bug, and Ms. Storrie recorded their hypotheses about what kind of insect it was. They thought it might be a bee, a walking stick, a grasshopper, or a praying mantis. They looked at books together, comparing the pictures and the words to their observations. The groups decided it was most likely a praying mantis, but decided they needed to collect more data. Using a checklist with facts about praying mantises, they watched the insect carefully. Ms. Storrie also captured some photos and videos to help their observations. What do you think? Is it a praying mantis?
